During the American Revolution, those who joined the Continental Army in the spring and summer but left before the bad weather and disease of fall and winter were called summer soldiers. America did not win its freedom because of those who fled discomfort, but because of those that stayed when things were tough. The ones who stayed had faith in God, country and victory. They were not denied. Thomas Paine, in the American Crisis wrote in the dark days of 1776: These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands by it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives everything its value. Heaven knows how to put a proper price upon its goods; and it would be strange indeed if so celestial an article as FREEDOM should not be highly rated.The war is no longer against an invading army. Its against a disease that challenges our faith and country. We must be strong for ourselves and our families. The battlefield is in our homes and communities. Americans today, like the Americans then, will win this war by uniting in a common goal of defeating this silent enemy.Not every American will join the fight.Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism were easy when times were good. Now times are not so good. We are separated from the people and the places we love, including our churches. Now its easier for summer soldiers to doubt and to despair. This is a luxury a Catholic cannot afford. As Knights of Columbus you are expected to have faith in God, in the Mercy of Christ, the blessed intercession of Mother Mary and the essential goodness of this country and its citizens. Knights are not summer soldiers. We fight evil with every prayer in good times and in bad. Our weapons are faith and service. We will win and we will rebuild. God Bless You and Your Families! 105"
